DIY Disputes

TaskRabbit drills down on the DIY tasks that cause couples to clash, and how to nail a harmonious atmosphere.

Spending more time ticking off your partner than ticking off your to-do list?

You’re not alone…

Our research shows that:

42 hours: is how long Brits are giving each other the cold shoulder on average, following a DIY bust-up

Half of the nation (46%) are putting off DIY tasks for up to 6 months, in order to keep the peace

26% of Brits frequently feud over DIY and 11% have even broken up over a DIY dispute

Relationship expert Sarah Louise Ryan has weighed in with the following advice:

“DIY can be especially prone to arguments because it causes us to work together in close proximity doing something which very few of us have expertise in. By getting a Tasker from TaskRabbit to come and help you out in the home with your improvements, couples can keep the peace and circumvent any of the spats that may arise when doing DIY together.”

Loved-up Lockes

We caught up with reality TV stars Ollie and Gareth Locke, who have been using TaskRabbit to renovate and update their home recently, saving them from numerous arguments in the process.

“Like any couple, we bicker about silly things often, and DIY is top of the list of things we disagree on. We’ve been doing lots of bits and pieces to our house to really make it more ours lately, and some of those tasks have resulted in tiffs.

The worst incident to date was Gareth’s dodgy picture mounting work over our bed, which resulted in a painting landing ON MY HEAD while I was asleep.”

The pair shared their advice for avoiding tiffs with your partner when undertaking projects around the home:

Before embarking on any DIY project, take some time to write down what you need, how long you estimate the task will take and who is responsible for what. Setting clear responsibilities and timings will (hopefully) avoid any arguments around who’s not pulling their weight during the project.

Don’t rush it

It’s important to give yourselves a realistic timeframe to complete the task. Both the project and your relationship will be in better shape at the end if you regularly step back, have a cup of tea, assess where you’re at and breathe.

Figure out who is good at what, and let them do it!

For example, in our relationship, Ollie has a fantastic eye so often decides on items to buy whereas Gareth is the king of organisation, making sure everything has a place and is neatly organised. So, we tend to stick to those roles and respect each other’s strengths.

Get professional help when you need it.

Don’t attempt DIY alone if neither of you have a clue what you’re doing, as it will only end in tears (sometimes literally!). You can book Taskers on TaskRabbit to help with projects that you don’t have the time, skills or inclination to do yourself. Whatever the task, there’s someone to help.

Put it into perspective.

Should you find yourself in a DIY-induced argument, try to remember you probably have bigger fish to fry then fighting over who put the leg on the new arm chair wrong. So, take a deep breath, remember why you love your other half and let it go.
